Sainsbury's is claiming a first for supermarket spuds with a new purple potato.

Purple Majesty contains anthocyanins, a type of flavanoid also found in blueberries. The variety, from supplier Albert Bartlett, can be cooked just like any other potato.

"We see Purple Majesty becoming a regular part of our customers' shopping basket because of its taste, versatility and fabulous colour," said Liz Jarman, head of product technology at Sainsbury's.

Packs of 1.25kg (rsp: £1.50) went into 100 stores this week.
