Tesco is extending its Simply drinks range with the launch of four new ales.

The 500ml beers, which were developed with Marston’s, roll out to stores next week as part of Tesco’s new Spring range and include IPA, Golden Ale, Dark Ale and Ginger Ale. All are priced £1.33 compared with the typical £1.99 for a branded ale in Tesco.

The retailer said the beers, which would initially be merchandised together, were designed to signpost iconic styles and help shoppers better navigate the wider ale fixture.

“With a plethora of brands it is difficult for people to find a way into the range and understand what they’re looking for,” explained BWS category technical manager Andy Gale.

“These beers give them the opportunity to try classic ales but there’s no pretension or brand cues that hide the type of product.”

Tesco’s new BWS range, unveiled this week, includes low-alcohol products and 0% abv wine-style Sorelle Sauvignon Blanc and Rosé (both rsp: £3.49) that were developed in conjunction with Beverage Brands.
