Aldi is trialling a 1.6m-long ‘supersized’ trolley to help shoppers load up with Specialbuys such as tents, garden furniture, cuddly toys and inflatable kayaks.

The discounter will also be adding new lines to its Specialbuys range more frequently throughout December, making each Tuesday an ‘on-sale’ day, along with the usual Thursday and Sunday.

The oversized trolley is being trialled in a newly opened store in Stamford, Lincolnshire. It features hooks and straps to secure products, plus a drop-down front to accommodate larger Specialbuys.

Other features include a dedicated wine rack, a lower shelf and a phone holder.

Aldi is using the trolley in a social media campaign promoting the extra Specialbuys on-sale day throughout December, with a video highlighting all the special features.

“Since the first ever Specialbuy was sold in the UK, the unique range of products has grown in popularity and is now a phenomenon with something of a cult following; there are entire social media channels dedicated to discussing the next Aisle of Aldi launches,” said Aldi UK MD of buying Julie Ashfield.

“We always hear of people popping in for a loaf of bread and coming out with a kayak or other impromptu Specialbuy purchases – so we thought we’d design a trolley to make this kind of shopping trip even easier.

“With the introduction of a Tuesday on-sale date this Christmas, it’s great that we can give our customers even more opportunities to get their hands on the latest must-haves, and we’re constantly on the lookout for new ways to help make shopping easier.”
