The average UK consumer is now eating more than 1kg of avocados each year.

UK consumption has more than doubled since 2004, when the average person ate 0.46kg.

Britain is now second only to France in avocado consumption in Europe, according to the World Avocado Congress.

The 1kg landmark was passed this season following year-round promotion, with South African avocados marketed in the summer and Chilean in the winter. Chile exported 7,000 tonnes of Hass to the UK this winter. Although total exports from Chile fell 27%, the shortfall was only felt in other EU countries.
