Southern hemisphere apple volumes are expected to be 7.8% down on last year, but pears should be 8.8% up, according to the World Apple and Pear Association. Its forecasts from industry groups in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, New Zealand and South Africa showed crops were expected to reach four million tonnes for apples and 1.3 million tonnes for pears.
Tom Lyall of the WAPA secretariat said: “WAPA is committed to co-ordinating industry steps to increase transparency on markets and to promote an upturn in the fortunes of the global apple and pear business.”
