Consumers need educating about Argentinian wine if it is to realise its full potential, a leading wine consultant has said.
While Malbec has driven a 20% hike in off-trade sales of Argentinian wine [Nielsen 52 w/e 1 February 2014], Wine consultant and specialist sommelier Matias Chiesa said the country had to embrace a wider range of grape varieties and educate consumers about wine-producing regions.
“Malbec is Argentina’s cover letter but we should be able to develop it,” added Chiesa. “Cabernet franc is an interesting grape and there is a niche market for Torrentes.”
He suggested consumer activity should be focused on the difference the region of origin could make to a wine.
