Retailers are playing down fears of a banana price war after a round of price cuts that alarmed suppliers.
The price falls were triggered by Asda which dropped its average price from 108p/kg to 94p, and Tesco, Somerfield and Sainsbury quickly followed. Morrisons went further, cutting the price to 85p. Suppliers have warned price promotions will damage the fruit, saying that when prices returned to normal consumers would perceive the fruit as expensive. However, Asda said the cut was so it could pass on the benefits of its strong links with suppliers.
