We were spoilt for choice for a special purchase this week as stores, we felt, were bound to be primed for St Valentine's Day, Shrove Tuesday and Chinese New Year. In the end we decided to buy lemon shaped Jif Lemon for Pancake Day. Asda again had the best buy at 33p  4p less than last year, but Morrisons' two for 50p had the edge on Tesco's buy one, get second half price offer. Somerfield didn't stock it this year, while Waitrose only sold the brand in a bottle and its own squeezy lemon. Sainsbury had it, and the Whitley Bay store gave it away with a McDougall's batter mix, giving some substance to its 50 items with bogofs' claim. Here our shopper liked the way Müller yogurts were now displayed on their sides making them easier to view and select. Tesco had a splendid display of pancake-making essentials and, on another aisle end, had lots of St Valentine's Day gifts. At Safeway, aisles were clogged by shelf fillers' trolleys, particularly around the freezers. A busy checkout also contributed to Andrex slipping through unscanned. Out of stocks were back with a vengeance, the main culprits being frozen and chilled food. Tesco's major refit, for example, left fridges and freezers all over the place, making restocking difficult. Only Sainsbury, Whitley Bay, and Asda came up trumps, the latter having the cheapest full basket at £37.94. {{GROCER 33 }}
