Asda has denied performing a u-turn on its Every Day Low Price Plus strategy by introducing a number of buy-one-get-one-free promotions.
An Asda spokesman said the offers on lines such as Pot Noodle, John West tuna chunks and Batchelors Pasta ‘n’ Sauce represented the next stage in the roll-out of ELDP Plus. He said: “Our suppliers have told us they want to see some fizz and excitement in their categories.”
Analysts say Asda has been forced to rethink its original strategy as, unlike Wal-Mart in the US, it has been unable to dominate the UK market.
