Asda has launched a scholarship scheme for farmers that aims to boost innovation in its beef supply chain.

The scholarships will fund three farmers to carry out research of their choosing anywhere in the world. Any Asda beef farmer is eligible to submit plans, with the successful candidates receiving funds to carry out their ideas as well as financial support to cover their absence. The initiative is part of the Beef Link initiative launched last autumn to boost the relationship between farmers, Anglo Beef Processors and Asda.

Shared findings from the research would bring new ways of working that would benefit British beef producers, said Jim Viggars, Asda meat buyer. "Our farmers are the experts in beef production, and are in the best position to propose research that will result in real improvements to their businesses," he said.

Last year Asda announced the extension of its Buy British policy to increase the amount of British beef it stocked.
