Commercial trials with southern hemisphere grape exports to Germany using experimental packaging are attracting the attention of UK retailers.
David Wilkinson, sales director of packaging supplier Longlife Solutions, said the grapes were exported in a carton liner which created its own atmosphere, avoiding dehydration without SO2 pads.
Brazilian shipper Timbauba & Guararapes Agricola is testing the DuoBags so conventional fruit could be delivered direct to UK supermarket shelves.
Wilkinson added: “This packaging could even dispense with wrapping fruit on the pallet, a further step in reducing costs and packaging waste.”
