At least that’s the approach taken by M&S, alone among major UK supermarkets in resisting ‘good, better, best.’ Until recently it is a strategy that has paid off, its food consistently buoying flagging fashion sales. In its most recent results like-for-like food sales had dropped 0.3% in an “underperformance” it blamed on rivals looking to “emulate its fresh produce and innovation” - copying its posh USP, in other words.
