Bacon processor Direct Table Foods will open a new £20m factory in Bury St Edmunds this month to replace one that burned down in 2004.

The state-of-the-art 3,500 sq m site will be producing rashers, joints and steaks using the latest pork curing, slicing and packaging technologies.

The plant will be eco-friendly, using the latest energy and water-efficiency technology, recycling heat from refrigeration compressors and collecting rain water from the roof for use in toilets and for outdoor cleaning.

It will have the capacity to process 300 tonnes of meat every week, with scope for future expansion.
