The bacon industry has given a cautious welcome to a price increase introduced by Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury.
This week’s The Grocer 33 shopping basket survey reveals that the cost of an eight-rasher pack of own-label unsmoked back bacon has soared from £1.38 to £1.58 at Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury. Morrisons’ price has so far remained at £1.49.
Neil Hammond, MD of Grampian Country Food Group’s pork business, said: “I am always pleased to see some inflation. However, the bacon market has
been affected by deflation for a very long time.”
Robert Smith, UK MD of the Dutch Meat Board, said he did not envisage a consumer outcry. “Bacon remains good value.”
