The Danes report a much livelier bacon market this week. Trade was vastly improved, with an increase of 2p/1p in gammons. There was the possibility of more increases in the pipeline, with the possibility that "some people were taking a speculative look at stock", said an industry source.
"But certainly things are a lot lot better this week," he said.
The Dutch reported retail demand as very strong but also picking up on the bulk side. They expected no real change to the tone of the market for some time to come, with pig prices higher in the Netherlands and raw material tight.
The one day shutdown in the Netherlands for a carnival would make supply even tighter, creating a firmer market.
The British reported a similar picture of retail demand stronger than would have normally been expected with a brisk trade on promoted lines.
