Christmas wasn't all about indulgence in 2009 - it was about salads too.

Sales of bagged salads were up 5.5% to £27.1m in December on the previous year [Nielsen 4w/e 26 December]. Market leader Florette reported 19.9% growth to £2.8m in the same period.

Producers predict a year of growth, with the new year healthy-eating trend expected to be followed by strong sales in the World Cup barbecue season.

"As we approach the end of the recession, we predict trading up from wholehead to bagged salads," said Florette commercial director Sandy Sewell.
