Confusion over potato supplies has left Sainsbury red-faced this week.
The retailer had claimed in last week's The Grocer that it would receive 80% of supplies of the new Lady Balfour organic potato from grower Greenvale.
However, the announcement provoked a protest from Tesco which pointed out it was receiving 50% of the potatoes with Sainsbury getting the other half.
A spokesman for Tesco said: "This means we can start to significantly reduce the amount of organic potatoes we import in favour of this British grown variety."
A spokesman for Sainsbury said: "Originally we were told we would be getting 80%.
"But it appears that this is not the case and it is in fact being split 50/50."
