A delegation of union bosses is set to visit Costa Rica to investigate the banana industry.
A group of delegates from the GMB union will be investigating reports which allege destruction of the environment and the exploitation of workers.
The delegation will be assessing claims workers earn £4 a day whilst being exposed to toxic chemicals.
The union has been invited to Central America by the banana workers’ union SITRAP.
Costa Rican producers were in the UK recently to promote their produce.
Martin Zuniga, director of banana policy with industry representatives Corbana, said growers were well trained, provided with the right protection equipment and a safe working environment.
