New supplier The Smoothie Company is hoping to cause a stir in the smoothies category with a range that beats its better-known rivals on price and shelf life.

It is pricing the ambient duo at between 79p to 99p - up to half the price of competitors - with a 12-month shelf life.

They come in mangoes & oranges and raspberries & peaches variants, contain no 'nasties' and are dairy, wheat and gluten free.

"A number of retailers would like to stock smoothies but are deterred because of the high price and short shelf life of chilled smoothies," said director James Green.

"This range offers customers an alternative premium-quality product."

Green added that the company could keep its prices down because its factory in Egypt's Nile Valley was close to fruit and had competitive labour rates.

The company plans to move into juices later this year with a mulberry-based juice, which Green claimed was higher in antioxidants than pomegranate.
