Uruguay, traditionally a favourite source for UK beef importers though in recent years better known on the continent, has been given permission by the EU authorities to resume restricted supply after an admirably efficient response to FMD outbreaks. However, the disease continues to cause severe disruption to South American-EU beef trade, the latest jolt due to the discovery of cases in Brazil.
