NFU opposes EU's Argentina beef help The NFU has expressed alarm about Brussels proposals to allow Argentina to export an extra 10,000 tonnes of beef into Europe. NFU president Ben Gill has written to agriculture commissioner Franz Fischler calling on him to drop the plans for a special import quota for the period June 2002 to 2003. The quota would be on top of the current annual allocation of 28,000t and has been put forward because of the country's economic problems. Gill said using the beef market to assist Argentina would have a serious impact. He pointed out that a fall in consumption across Europe has left the beef market too fragile to cope with additional imports. He also pressed home the UK's continuing concerns about Argentina's foot and mouth status. {{MEAT }}
