Private storage subsidies for beef are to be introduced for the first in more than a decade as the initial move by Brussels to prevent the market collapsing as a consequence of the French BSE crisis. Critics point out the system would absorb beef in the next few weeks but release it back into the market early next year, when prices would normally be expected to soften seasonally. It seems a safe bet Brussels will have to introduce a full programme of intervention buying, a serious setback after its efforts to reform the beef market support regime and prepare for a new round of world trade talks. {{MEAT }}
