Belton Cheese has scooped the top prize at Tesco's fifth Cheese Challenge.

The cheesemaker's rind-on mature Double Gloucester was voted the judges' favourite by a panel of 30 industry experts. The cheese will win a listing in Tesco stores, starting when production plans are finalised and packaging is designed.

"We're bowled over and delighted," said Belton MD Justin Beckett. "The product has been in development for two years as we've tried to perfect its buttery flavour."

The cheese is mould-ripened in cloth and sold rind-on. Belton already supplies the multiples with a range of organic and conventional territorial cheeses.

Four other cheeses also won awards as the best soft cheese, soft washed-rind cheese, blue cheese and blended cheese. Each will also win a listing at local Tesco stores, said Tesco commercial director Carolyn Bradley. "We'll have to work with each of them before we know how much cheese they can supply and to how many stores."
