The commercial shows a grey monster shouting about being hunted down by the “finger of death”, before ending on the
strapline “Domestos spray. Millions of germs will die”.
The ad did not carry a scheduling restriction and 27 viewers complained, some saying their children had nightmares.
In response, the Broadcast Advertising Clearance Centre said that Harry Potter and Roald Dahl films and books contained similar characters. However, the ASA said the ad should not be shown during kids’ programming.
Also upheld by the ASA were complaints about an ad for Reckitt Benckiser-owned Finish Powerball 4-in-1 dishwasher tablets, which said tests on a rival brand showed it caused corrosion within 30 washes.
