A flood of cheap imports could kill off rice production in the European Union within five years, EU farm commissioner Franz Fischler has warned. The Everything But Arms free-trade treaty with less- developed countries would eliminate import duties on rice coming from most of the major non-EU rice-producing countries by 2005, he said. Unless rice-producing countries such as Italy, France and Spain accepted reform of the EU rice market regime now, they would struggle to compete, said Fischler. "After 2005, you can forget about the traditional system. After full implementation of the EBA, without changes, rice will no longer be produced in Europe," he said. {{NEWS }}
