English fruit growers are meeting at a conference sponsored by Hargreaves Plants in London on January 28 to explore the potential to expand UK production of blueberries.
Currently there are only a few specialist growers, but with multiple demand for imported fruit growing, speakers will concentrate on new ways to grow fruits using substrate as the crop needs acidic soil.
Stuart Stubbins, previously soft fruit buyer with M& S and now a consultant to the company, will illustrate potential growth.
British Summer Fruits reports the market at nearly £10m, 47% up year-on-year. Main sources during the summer are Spain, France, Holland and Poland.
