We Brits like our eccentric bank holiday pastimes - Morris dancing, bog snorkelling that sort of thing.

So it was with great joy that the annual Cheese Rolling competition took place in Gloucestershire on Monday. The delightfully named Kenny Rackers, from Colorado Springs, travelled 4,500 miles to successfully fall down a hill in pursuit of some cheese. Local lass Lucy Townsend won the women’s race.
About 3,000 spectators enjoyed themselves too - despite official warnings about ambulance-chasing insurance claims. Killjoy cops even warned 86-year-old cheesemaker Diana Smart she could be held responsible if anyone picked up an injury diving after her fare.

A lightweight, foam Double Gloucester was used instead - which at least allowed more people to enjoy Diana’s cheese, unsullied by the pawprints of happy, worn-out lunatics.
