The map is littered with towns ‘too posh for a pound shop’ - but Haywards Heath is no longer among them.

It is getting a 99p Stores - the retail equivalent of a knock on the door from Standard & Poor’s saying your IOU would be a lot more convincing if it wasn’t written in crayon.

The town’s nice enough but it’s hardly, say, Hampstead Heath. So you wonder how seriously to take the howls about house prices - especially as they’re giving the shop free buzz for its grand opening.
