Icelandic beer fans were cruelly denied a new choice last week when a local drink was banned by health inspectors.

Disappointed brewer Dagbjartur Ariliusson, of the Stedji brewery, had planned to offer “something ethnic” to drinkers at a midwinter festival - a special brew made with whale meal, which is a powdery by-product of boiled Moby-Dick.

Sounds delicious! Ariliusson described the beer as dark and rich, adding creepily: “You can feel the whale taste in the undertone”. Definitely ‘dark’, then…
