Hard-pressed mushroom growers can look forward to a much-needed boost next weekend when BBC2 airs Ever Wondered About Mushrooms?, a half-hour documentary following the growing cycle of the famous fungi.
The show will air on Saturday, June 4 at 11.30am, when the channel typically attracts an audience of around two million viewers.
And, according to the programme makers, supermarkets should brace themselves for a surge in demand for mushrooms. A spokesman said: “Consumer demand for recipe cards following each programme in the series has reached record levels. We are sure this TV programme will create a demand for more mushrooms.”
News of the broadcast will be welcomed by UK growers, many of whom are in dire straits. In February, Warwick HRI said growers should consider getting out of mushrooms and growing other, more profitable crops instead.
