Pork processors are being urged to improve meat-eating quality by taking advantage of a free BPEX scheme.

Several large companies have expressed an interest, but BPEX wants smaller processors to benefit as well.

The Meat Quality Survey aims to help processors improve the quality of pork by changing practices, such as the transport and lairage of the pigs, killing systems and the way the carcase is stored after dressing.

"We can look at the whole chain," said BPEX knowledge transfer manager Silvia Nicolau-Solano, who is working with Bristol University on the project.
