English Bramley growers have renewed their agreement to market only new season Bramleys that are more than 90mm in diameter into the fresh fruit trade - at least until next month.

They hope that will ensure a smooth transfer from the 2005/2006 stored crop and keep prices strong.

There is still sufficient fruit left to meet demands through this month, but from September the size band for fresh crop will reduce to 85mm for loose fruit and 80mm for that sold in prepacks.

Latest estimates put the total crop at similar levels to last year.

Including the Northern Irish crop, it is expected to hit 83,000 tonnes.

English Apples and Pears is planning another round of in-store promotions, recipe leaflets and activities around the new season message.
