Beef imports from Brazil could be banned if a

veterinary inspection of the country concludes standards have not been raised, the European Commission has said.

Health and consumer protection commissioner Markos Kyprianou promised British and Irish farming unions last week there would be immediate action if Brazil was still failing to implement rules for animal identification and disease control.

The NFU urged Kyprianou to apply the same standards to Brazilian imports as those that have been applied to EU-produced beef.
