A produce brokerage called Big Cabbage is being launched in Derbyshire to make it easier for local people to get their hands on fruit and vegetables grown in the county.
Initially it will supply the produce in the county's five community food shops, including one in Winster, but organiser David Mitchell is also approaching independent retailers. The organisation is also building a distribution depot, which is expected to be completed in October.
The Big Cabbage partnership says it wants to help local people sidestep supermarkets, connect with nearby producers and cut the environmental impact of food distribution. It is calling for growers to come forward as suppliers.
The scheme was conceived a year ago and is claimed to be the first in the country. Mitchell said he had high hopes of reproducing the model in other counties. It will be promoted at Derbyshire's food and drink festival in May.
