Sales of beefburgers have risen by almost 25% as the UK fired up its barbecues to enjoy the hot weather.

The Meat and Livestock Commission has reported that sales of steaks, lamb chops, sausages and pork steaks also rose significantly during the four week period to August 17.

Consumer marketing manager of the Commission, Chris Lamb, said: “This just goes to prove when the sun comes out, the barbies come out and people turn to British meat.

“This is what everybody was saying during the heatwave and now we have the proof of the pudding in these latest figures.”

TNS Sofres Superpanel figures show sales by value of burgers surged by 24.4%, that of lamb steaks rose by 10.8%, sausages by 8.9% and pork steaks by 5.8%.
