Who: Tesco

What: Tesco Finest Ultimate Beef Burger Kit with Pulled Pork

Where: Chilled meals

When: Launched April 2015

How much: £5/605g

Why: Part of Tesco’s premium Finest range and directly tapping the pulled meat boom, this kit comprises two British beefsteak burgers, slow-cooked pork shoulder marinated in herb and spices, two brioche rolls, apple & bourbon sauce, and two slices of Cheddar cheese with chillies.

Consumer verdict: Considered a novel option - with 83% of testers rating it ‘new and different’ - this kit generated much pre-trial interest, though the premium price inhibited greater engagement. The burgers were well received and achieved above-average ratings across many measures. Some testers described the burgers as “appealing and flavoursome” though a few regarded them “chewy and greasy”. Overall, it scored above the category average, but below-average scores for health and value for money were reflected in a quarter of testers stating it was not for them. Health issues also affected frequency of purchase, limiting it to ‘weekend treat’ status.

Pre-trial purchase: 34%

Post-trial purchase: 41%

Better than what’s out there: 40%

New and different: 83%

Overall score: 35/50
