Cornish sausage producer Kernow has acquired food wholesaler Vealls of Newquay for an undisclosed sum.
The deal will safeguard 13 jobs at Vealls’ St Columb base, from which it supplies more than 200 businesses in the South West with a range of chilled, ambient and frozen foods.
The £1m Vealls business, founded in 1964, would enforce Kernow’s powers to compete with regional and national players in the South West, said Kernow MD Gavin Roberts.
“The two companies will run side by side enabling them to realise efficiencies by sharing some facilities and resources, including distribution,” he added.
Started in 2007 by Roberts as an artisan sausage business, Kernow’s portfolio has grown to include dry cured bacon and fresh Cornish pork.
The acquisition was made possible through an investment from the Business Catalyst Fund - a the £5m investment scheme supported by the government’s Regional Growth Fund - and a loan from South West Investment Group.
