Virgin Wines grew like-for-like sales 12% over the festive period, selling 145,000 cases of wine in the six weeks to 2 January.
The online retailer’s specialist wine gifting business, Sendagift.co.uk, sold 11,500 gifts during December - a year-on-year increase of 130%.
Virgin Wines also said sales through its 34 WSET-trained wine advisors increased 21%, emphasising the demand for personalised services in web-based wine buying.
“The 2015 Christmas trading period has been exceptional, putting us in a very good position to support our three-year growth plan,” said CEO Jay Wright. “Our results highlight the strength of our unique proposition and consumers’ ever-growing confidence in buying wine online - especially during the festive season.”
Online wine sales in the year to May accounted for 11% of the £6.3bn UK wine market [Wilson Drinks Report May 2015], with Virgin Wines holding a 5.6% share of online sales.
