The Food Standards Agency's decision over whether to add folic acid to bread has been delayed because of fears over a link to cancer.

A decision was expected this year but is more likely to be the middle of next year because the FSA wants to see the results of two trials which are investigating the effects of folic acid on heart disease and cancer, according to the Daily Telegraph.

The studies will not be published until late this year so scientists are holding back until mid-2009 when they will report their views to the FSA, the paper added.
