After years as one of the vegetables most hated by children, spinach is making a comeback, according to Tesco.

Sales of the green veg – favoured by cartoon strongman Popeye – are in 24% year-on-year growth [Kantar].

It is currently the second fastest growing canned vegetable behind broad beans, which are growing at 30%.

“Spinach got saddled with the unfair tag of being, with cabbage, the most unloved of all vegetables, despite the fact that it is one of the most nutritionally beneficial foods you can eat,” said Tesco canned foods buyer Kate Evans.

Restaurants and gastro pubs are reporting increased popularity, Evans added, while celebrity chefs and health gurus are also flagging it up its benefits.
