Poor fishing in Pacific Industry sources are reporting very poor fishing for tuna in the Western Pacific, aggravated by the typhoon season. With the El Niño effect now "official", canneries are very worried about the supply position and most factories have now withdrawn all new offers. "Canneries, especially those who went short against forward sales of canned tuna to the EU, are desperately trying to find fish but not even by paying $50/t more can they find them," said one trader. "Importers are now reporting very delayed shipments of old contracts or non delivery, due to the low sales price of canned tuna. "The recent low tuna prices are now over and only the dollar/pound exchange rate will ease the burden a bit." Stateside, Del Monte, the new owner of StarKist tuna, is expected by tuna traders to increase prices. {{CANNED GOODS }}
