Spanish price hike Spanish mandarin orange canners are facing problems as growers have pushed up prices due to the seasonal demand for fruit, which this year seems to be heading for record levels. At the same time, offers of Chinese product in Germany are causing buyers to switch from their traditional Spanish suppliers. UK traders depend on Spain for supplies as few, if any, Chinese factories have been visited and approved by UK buyers, a prerequisite which is not followed in some European countries. On average, Chinese product is about 8% cheaper, although some of the smaller producers have quoted lower. Many of the Chinese canners are still highly labour intensive, having not invested in what has become known as the Japanese system' of peeling and segmenting, the method used by all the Spanish packers. {{CANNED GOODS }}
