Old Speckled Hen maker Greene King has been awarded the Carbon Trust Standard the first British brewer to gain the status.

The Suffolk brewer and bottling plant has implemented a number of environmental measures over the past three years, including the introduction of lightweight bottling that saves the equivalent of five million bottles of glass a year, and the limiting of all delivery vehicles to 52mph to cut fuel consumption.

"We've taken great strides in cutting back on our consumption of energy, fuel and water," said Greene King Brewing Company MD Justin Adams. "The award is about ongoing commitment and all parts of the company are determined to keep reduction of carbon footprint as one of the key priorities in coming years."
