Sainbury's is ditching the cardboard boxes used for its Basics cereal range.

The supermarket axed boxes for its Basics Rice Pops a year ago and will now sell all Basics cereals in bags by the end of the year. The move will save 165 tonnes of packaging.

"We decided to convert the whole range because of positive feedback from customers on our Basics Rice Pops," said Sainsbury's head of packaging Stuart Lendrum.

The only Basics cereal to remain in a box will be Breakfast Wholewheat Biscuits, which Lendrum said needed a box to prevent damage.
