Caribbean banana producers have expressed concern over the battle for Safeway.
The prime minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines has reportedly written to the Office of Fair Trading stating that Wal-Mart taking over Safeway would have "dire consequences" for the islands. Ralph Gonsalves said the company's banana buying policies were already damaging the islands' banana industries and the situation could worsen if the purchase of Safeway were allowed.
Gonsalves said his government would support Sainsbury as the best buyer of Safeway.
