A project to set up a virtual centre of excellence to boost Britain's pig industry has been given the go ahead.

The National Pig Development Centre will link experts based around the country for pig research, development and knowledge transfer. It has been supported by BPEX and a key aim will be to pass information on new research to those in the industry that need it.

Areas already identified by the centre for research include new sire lines, managing variations in meat quality and ways to reducing the seasonal changes in outdoor pig production.

It is all geared towards least-cost production, said Mark Wilson at BPEX.
