Sainsbury’s has suffered its second online grocery glitch in three months following a computer failure on Monday.

Customers faced hours of delays in their online grocery orders and struggled to get through to the busy customer care line this week after a “temporary issue” hit Sainsbury’s systems.

The FT claimed yesterday that as many as 200 superstores were affected, but Sainsbury’s said only a “small number” of orders needed to be rebooked as a result of the glitch, which has now been resolved.

The news comes after technical difficulties hit its online ordering system in March, causing late delivery and cancellations.

Affected customers complained on Twitter they had not received groceries in their scheduled timeslot without any explanation, and reported trouble getting through on the helpline.

The second glitch will be a blow for Sainsbury’s, which is keen to establish itself as a leader in online grocery. The supermarket posted an 8% growth in online sales last year as it launched a number of new initiatives including same-day delivery and a one-hour service in London.
