Tesco has decided to keep the doors shut at its flagship Covent Garden Metro store, despite getting the go ahead to re-open by Westminster City Council.

The retailer said the store, which was ordered to close down after a serious mouse infestation was discovered, would not be open for trading until it carried out a full refurbishment.

“We insist on the highest standards of hygiene in our stores and took urgent action to deal with this isolated incident,” said a spokeswoman.

“We are pleased to say that Westminster City Council Environmental Health Officers are satisfied with the standards in the store and have now withdrawn the notice, however we have decided to remain voluntarily closed whilst we carry out a complete refurbishment to meet our own very high standards.

“We hope this step goes some way to reassuring customers how seriously we have taken this matter and look forward to opening our newly refreshed store.”
