US supplier Chia Co has rolled out pre-packed chia seed mixes in the UK following EU approval of the ‘superfood’.
The high-fibre, omega-3-rich seed - which hails from a South American plant - has grown in popularity since being granted EU approval for use in bread products in 2009. Burgen launched a loaf containing the seed in April last year and they have been available in baking mixes.
But after receiving the green light from the EU Advisory Committee on Novel Foods and Processes in January, chia can now be used in a range of products. This has prompted launches such as the Chia Co pre-packed fruit and seed mixes now stocked by Whole Foods Market.
