Consumers are increasingly favouring chicken in their Sunday roasts as a cheaper alternative to red meat. Families ate chicken as part of a Sunday roast on 6% more occasions in the 12 months to May, the latest figures available [TNS]. A fifth of the white meat is now eaten on a Sunday. The new popularity of chicken on a Sunday is driving overall consumption of the meat, which is up 4% to 3.7 billion occasions. Smaller households are also thought to be favouring chicken, which is seen as easier to cook.
